Connecting Through Community: ATC Mysterious Annual Journey
On December 12 and 13, the Andean Travel Company team came together for our annual surprise journey—an experience designed to reconnect us, inspire us, and reaffirm our commitment to the living cultures that define Ecuador.
Hacienda Zuleta
We traveled north for approximately two and a half hours until reaching Hacienda Zuleta, a remarkable colonial estate located in the province of Imbabura. There, we learned about its rich history and enduring legacy under the leadership of former Ecuadorian president Galo Plaza Lasso, whose family has preserved the property for more than a century. Today, Hacienda Zuleta stands as a symbol of sustainable development, seamlessly combining modern agricultural practices with heritage conservation, and is widely recognized as one of the country’s most iconic historic hotels. During our visit, we took part in hands-on activities such as touring its agricultural plantations and visiting the cheese production facility, where we learned about traditional and sustainable dairy processes. We also visited the Andean condor rescue and rehabilitation center, gaining insight into conservation efforts dedicated to protecting this emblematic species—of which an estimated 150 condors currently remain in Ecuador. To further immerse ourselves in the estate’s natural surroundings, we explored its scenic trails by bicycle and on horseback, before concluding the visit with a delicious lunch featuring local flavors.
San Clemente community
From there, we continued on to the community of San Clemente, where ancestral Indigenous traditions remain vibrantly alive. We enjoyed a traditional pachamanca meal, dressed in authentic community attire, and admired the rustic architecture of local homes. That evening, we stayed with the community, sharing music, traditional dances, and everyday life in a truly meaningful cultural exchange.
The following morning began with a farm-to-table breakfast featuring fresh, locally produced foods such as clay-griddle corn tortillas, freshly milked dairy, coffee, honey, and homemade jams—products lovingly made by families who still practice bartering as part of their economy.
Macarilla – Chota Valley
Our journey then continued north to Mascarilla, in the Chota Valley, where we experienced Afro-Ecuadorian traditions firsthand. During our visit, we learned about native medicinal plants, community-based goat milk production, and the artisanal preparation of goat cheese and caramel. The experience came alive as we danced to the rhythm of Bomba del Chota, an Afro-Ecuadorian music and dance tradition celebrated for its joyful energy and iconic bottle-balancing dance.
To conclude our journey, we traveled to the parish of Tumbabiro and relaxed at Hacienda Chachimbiro, enjoying a well-deserved moment of rest in its natural thermal waters.
