Explore the Andes on Horseback
At Hacienda El Porvenir, you can ride alongside wild horses and fighting bulls, spot high-altitude birds like condors, and admire wonderful landscapes. Some routes reach 4,200m, offering spectacular views of Cotopaxi. Whether walking, trotting, or galloping through the páramo, horseback riding is one of the best ways to experience the region’s beauty and traditions.
The hacienda offers a variety of guided rides, from gentle excursions to full-day expeditions, using criollo paramero horses. Guests are provided with traditional riding gear, including woolen ponchos, waterproof ponchos, saddlebags, helmets, and zamarros (sheepskin chaps). - Owl’s Refuge (4 hours) Traverse the southwestern slopes of Rumiñahui Volcano, reaching Chusigmachai (Owl’s Refuge), a natural cave home to the Great Horned Owl and hummingbird nests. (Intermediate level)
- El Porvenir & Cotopaxi National Park Limits (6 hours) A thrilling high-altitude ride, spotting wild bulls and Andean birds, with spectacular views of 12 volcanoes and a stop at Chusigmachai. (Intermediate-Advanced level)
All rides include a local Spanish-speaking guide. These excursions are available to individuals over the age of six, with a maximum of eight passengers per guide, allowing for an intimate and personal experience as you explore the Andean highlands on horse-riding.
